Alticarta
Attribution & Data Sources
Alticarta builds terrain, lake and seafloor models from elevation, boundary, water, river, land cover, geocoding, landform name, undersea feature name, planetary elevation and nomenclature data supplied by many public agencies, open-data projects and research groups, plus a bathymetry dataset assembled from 28 separate government and research sources. Several of the licenses under which this data is published require public acknowledgement. This page credits every source Alticarta uses, in one place, regardless of whether that source's own license happens to require it: 66 sources in all, one entry each below.
Every credit line below is either quoted verbatim from the source's own published license or metadata, or, where no specific wording is published, states the source and license exactly as recorded in Alticarta's own code and dataset. Nothing here is invented.
Elevation Data
- USGS 3DEP (United States): U.S. Geological Survey 3D Elevation Program. A work of the U.S. federal government; public domain.
- swissALTI3D (Switzerland & Liechtenstein): swisstopo, the Swiss Federal Office of Topography, via the Open Government Data terms on data.geo.admin.ch. Required attribution: "© swisstopo".

- OpenTopoData (SRTM / ASTER, global fallback): public SRTM and ASTER GDEM elevation data served via the OpenTopoData API.
- GEBCO_2026 Grid (global, land and ocean; global-grid box builds). GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans) Bathymetric Compilation Group. Public domain, attribution required, per GEBCO's own terms of use (gebco.net/data-products/gridded-bathymetry/terms-of-use). Required attribution: "GEBCO Bathymetric Compilation Group 2026 (2026). The GEBCO_2026 Grid - a continuous terrain model for oceans and land at 15 arc-second intervals. doi:10.5285/4f68d5c7-45eb-f999-e063-7086abc036fa." The GEBCO Grid should not be used for navigation or for any other purpose involving safety at sea. Every seafloor box also states how much of its seafloor was directly measured and how much is predicted or interpolated, from the GEBCO_2026 type identifier (TID) grid, which is published under the same dataset citation (Seabed 2030 Global Center, 2026-09-28); the 2026 TID is always paired with the 2026 grid.
- Hall (2002) (the Caspian Sea, inside the GEBCO_2026 Grid): the Caspian's depths in the GEBCO grid come from one compilation, credited on every box that covers the Caspian: Hall, J K (2002), Bathymetric compilations of the seas around Israel I: The Caspian and Black Seas, Geological Survey of Israel, Current Research Vol. 13. (Source: Seabed 2030 Global Center, 2026-09-28. The same source notes the Aral Sea has no direct depth observations; GEBCO_2026 holds the Aral basin as land, and Alticarta labels the Aral Sea "Former seabed · now land".) Where a pre-generated grid like this one makes up the largest share of a box's seafloor, the box is labelled COMPILED.
Planetary Elevation Data
A box built on another world uses one elevation model for that world. The global models of the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Ceres, Pluto, Charon and Venus are hosted for Alticarta from the USGS Astrogeology Science Center's Astropedia. Each of those entries quotes the access and use constraints exactly as the dataset's own FGDC metadata record states them, and cites the dataset the way that record identifies it (origin, date, title, edition, publisher). Six of the seven ask that the authors be cited. Saturn's moons Mimas, Tethys, Dione, Rhea and Phoebe come from shape models archived at the PDS Small Bodies Node under Creative Commons Zero, cited with their DOIs as the archive asks; Jupiter's moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa from regional models published under CC BY 4.0, which requires this credit. Every LICENSE built on a world carries the same citation as its entry here.

Planetary Feature Names
- IAU Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature: the names, types, centers and diameters of surface features on the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Ceres, Pluto, Charon, Venus, Mimas, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Phoebe, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa, maintained by the USGS Astrogeology Science Center on behalf of the International Astronomical Union Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (https://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/). The provider's FAQ (https://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/Page/FAQ) states: "Everything in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature is in the public domain." and offers this citation: International Astronomical Union Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature. "Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature." (access date). http://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/. Each downloaded shapefile's own FGDC metadata states "Public domain." Every LICENSE built from a named feature carries this citation with the date Alticarta accessed the gazetteer.
Undersea Feature Names and Seas
Ocean pieces are found by name. The names, their types and the outlines a box is framed from come from three gazetteers; where they overlap, GEBCO's name is used, and every gazetteer that lists the feature is credited on the LICENSE built from it.
- GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names: the names, types, points and (for about half) the lines and outlines of 5,311 undersea features, from the GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names, hosted by the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry at NOAA NCEI. Used under the same terms as the GEBCO Grid (NOAA NCEI, 2026-09-28). Citation, as the provider asks: "IHO-IOC GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names, www.gebco.net"; in full: International Hydrographic Organization-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IHO-IOC) GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names. - GeoNames also supplies undersea feature names (its feature class U), the named seas and oceans, and the Caspian and Aral seas; see its entry under Boundary & Water Data below.
Landform Names and Locations
- Wikidata: the names (in every language), types and locations of the famous landforms listed first in Mountains search, and the point a model built from one of them is centred on. Snapshot of 2026-10-06, read from the Wikidata Query Service (https://query.wikidata.org/). Wikidata's own licensing page (wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Licensing) states: "All structured data (i.e. the main, Property, Lexeme, and EntitySchema namespaces) is released into the public domain under Creative Commons Zero." Crediting is not required; credited here anyway so the provenance chain stays complete. A model built from one of these landforms names its Wikidata record in its LICENSE.
Boundary & Water Data
- Natural Earth: public domain vector map data, used for country and continent boundaries, and for the admin-1 states/provinces layer (`ne_10m_admin_1_states_provinces`) that fills in a state or province for a modeled lake (see Lake Bathymetry below) when no other source places one, and for the country or continent pre-filled on the second line of an embossed label. Natural Earth's own terms of use (naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/) state: "All versions of Natural Earth raster + vector map data found on this website are in the public domain... No permission is needed to use Natural Earth. Crediting the authors is unnecessary." Credited here anyway so the provenance chain stays complete.
- GeoNames: geographical database used to attach a state/province to a modeled lake and, for modeled lakes that had no name of their own, the lake's name (taken from a GeoNames place name inside the lake's outline); and for undersea feature names, named seas and oceans, and the Caspian and Aral seas (see Undersea Feature Names and Seas above). License: CC BY 4.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). GeoNames' own attribution wording: "a link or another reference to GeoNames."
- Canadian Geographical Names Database (CGNDB): the points of named capes, points and islands in Canada that end the closing lines separating Georgian Bay and the North Channel from Lake Huron (see Lake Bathymetry below), read from geogratis.gc.ca/services/geoname/en/geonames on 2026-10-16. License: Open Government Licence - Canada, version 2.0 (open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada), which grants "a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use the Information, including for commercial purposes". - Geographic Names Information System (GNIS): the points of named points, islands and places in the United States that end the closing lines separating Saginaw Bay, Green Bay and the North Channel from their lakes, read from the U.S. Geological Survey's geographic names service (carto.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/geonames/MapServer) on 2026-10-16. A work of the U.S. federal government; public domain. USGS's own policy (https://www.usgs.gov/information-policies-and-instructions/copyrights-and-credits): "USGS-authored or produced data and information are considered to be in the U.S. Public Domain." and "When using information from USGS information products, publications, or websites, we ask that proper credit be given."
- OpenStreetMap: used for place-name search and administrative-boundary resolution (via the Nominatim service) and for water body geometry (via the Overpass API), and for the river lines drawn in the Water filament on painted color models (OpenStreetMap waterway lines). OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). See openstreetmap.org/copyright for the full terms.
Land Cover
- ESA WorldCover (global, 10 m, 2021, version 200): the land cover that paints forest, fields, bare rock, snow, built-up land, wetland and water on painted color models made with Land cover. Embossing Fonts
The raised lettering on a framed model is cut from one of these fonts, each used exactly as Google Fonts distributes it. All are published under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1 (openfontlicense.org); each font's own license file is kept beside it in Alticarta's source. No font file is included in a downloaded model: the letters are converted to solid geometry.
